Summary:
In many cell types the sodium channel is responsible for generation and propagation of action potentials, chiefly in nerve and muscle. Voltage-sensitive sodium channels are heteromeric complexes consisting of a large glycosylated alpha subunit (approximately 260 kD) and 2 smaller beta subunits (33-39 kD). The transmembrane alpha subunit is responsible for the functional activity of the channel (Litt et al., 1989). In the brain, there are 4 different alpha-subunit genes encoding 3 main subunits: types I (SCN1A; MIM 182389), II (SCN2A1 and SCN2A2; MIM 601219), and III (SCN3A; MIM 182391). Of these, the type II sodium channel mRNA is the most abundant (Litt et al., 1989).[supplied by OMIM] (PubMed Links)
